A commercial kitchen suppression system cannot be quoted properly from a menu, a floor plan alone, or a single photograph of the cooking line. The fire suppression quote process must establish what creates the risk, where the fire could travel, and which appliances, extraction components and fuel supplies need to be protected. That work at the start is what prevents costly changes, delayed installation or gaps in protection later.

For operators and facilities managers, the aim is straightforward: receive a clear, accurate proposal for a compliant system that protects the kitchen without disrupting trade. The detail behind it matters because every kitchen layout, cooking method and extraction arrangement is different.

Why a kitchen suppression quote needs detail

Kitchen fires behave differently from general building fires. Cooking oils and fats can ignite at high temperatures, fire can travel through canopies and ductwork, and heat sources may continue to feed the incident unless they are shut down. A suitable suppression system must detect the fire, discharge the correct extinguishing agent over the hazard and, where required, isolate gas or electrical supplies.

A low headline price can look attractive, but it may exclude essential interfaces, fail to cover an appliance added during refurbishment, or make no proper allowance for access and out-of-hours working. Equally, a quotation can appear expensive when it includes the system elements needed to meet an insurer’s requirements and provide a properly supported installation.

The right quote is therefore not simply a price for cylinders and pipework. It is a defined scope of protection, installation and continuing responsibility.

The fire suppression quote process step by step

1. Understanding the kitchen and the risk

The first stage is to gather accurate information about the premises. This normally includes the type of operation, kitchen trading hours, cooking equipment, canopy dimensions, ductwork arrangement and the available routes for installing system pipework and control equipment.

The appliance schedule is especially important. Fryers, ranges, chargrills, woks, solid-fuel equipment and high-output cooking appliances do not present identical risks. Their location beneath the canopy, the number of cooking zones and the fuel used will affect the system design. A change as simple as moving a fryer or adding a chargrill can alter the nozzle layout and the capacity required.

Photographs, measured drawings and a discussion with the person responsible for the kitchen can provide a useful starting point. For a new build, they may be enough to prepare a budget quotation. For an existing, operational kitchen, a site survey is usually the sensible route before the final scope is agreed.

2. Surveying the canopy, appliances and services

A site survey confirms the details that drawings can miss. The surveyor checks the canopy, filters, access panels, duct route, ceiling voids, obstructions and practical locations for cylinders, manual pull stations and control panels. They also identify the services that may need to be isolated when the system activates.

This is where third-party interfaces are considered. A suppression system may need to shut off the gas supply, isolate electrical equipment, signal a fire alarm system, control ventilation or connect with building management arrangements. These interfaces should never be treated as an afterthought. Once the risk and site conditions are understood, the system can be designed around the cooking line. This includes the number and position of detection points, discharge nozzles, extinguishing agent cylinders, pipework runs and any required fuel shut-off equipment.

The system specification should be appropriate for commercial kitchen use and aligned with the requirements of the manufacturer, relevant standards, the fire risk assessment and, where applicable, insurer guidance. There are trade-offs. A compact kitchen with straightforward appliances may need a relatively simple system. A large hotel kitchen, multi-canopy site or operation with complex electrical and gas interlocks will require more design work and a wider installation scope. The correct approach depends on the risk, not on applying the same package to every kitchen.

4. Receiving a clear written scope and cost

A useful quotation makes it easy to see what is included. It should set out the proposed system, protected appliances or zones, detection and discharge arrangement, control equipment, shutdown interfaces, installation works and commissioning. It should also state whether certification, staff handover, warranty and planned maintenance are included or priced separately.

Look carefully at assumptions. If the proposal relies on existing gas solenoids, electrical isolation points or suitable fire alarm connections, those assumptions should be explicit. The same applies to making good, specialist access equipment, out-of-hours working and any builder’s works. Clear exclusions are not a warning sign when they are properly explained. What affects the cost of a suppression system?

Questions to resolve before approving the quote

From approval to protected operation
