Why do I need a Kitchen Fire Suppression System?
Lots of commercial kitchens thoughout the UK do not still have a kitchen fire suppression system fitted. This is because historially many people did not see the need for fitting a kitchen fire suppression system unless they had to i.e. insurer, fire Service etc. Ultimately that is still true today in that many still don’t fit a system until they have to!
But kitchen fire suppression systems are a requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order or the Fire Act (Scotland) or where you have to carry out a Fire Risk Assessment and as part of that Fire Risk Assessment you must identify your fire risks and where they are high (a kitchen is classed as a high risk) then you must reduce that risk and the easiest way of soing that is with a kitchen fire suppression system.
The system we install are all approved for use in the UK and have 3rd Party Approval to prove they will work and are accepted by Insurers.
How Does A Kitchen Fire Suppression System Work?
The systems work in two ways, first by operation by a member of staff who has identified a fire and cannot safely use a fire blanket or portable fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire will operate a Manual Pull Station. Or by automatic operation of a fusible link, pneumatic tubing or electronic detection which is fitted inside the plenum (behind the filters) and that detects a fire in that area.
What Is In The Cylinder?
The liquid is similar to a foam fire extinguisher specially designed for hot fat with a high PH mix to ensure to knowck doen the flames quickly. Each manufacturer has its own unique mix but they are very similar.
How Does The Liquid Put Out The fire?
Whether the system is activated manually or automatically it covers the same in that it discharges the specially designed foam over the appliances and into the canopy and ducts. This will cool the fire and then when it forms a layer (saponification) over the appliances and will also cut off the oxygen.
It basically operates as a giant fixed fire extinguisher that operates even when your not there automatically.
